Mastering Scar Concealment: Makeup Techniques and Product Recommendations

Oct 15, 2024 By Finnegan

It is often said that the only certainties in life are death, taxes, and perhaps we should add, scars. Whether it's a mark from a past pimple, a memento from a mishandled curling iron, or a childhood knee scrape that has lingered, most individuals likely bear some form of scar.

For those who are unbothered by their scars, that's wonderful. However, for those who wish to conceal a particularly visible scar, especially on the face, makeup can be an effective tool. It's important to note that the method for using makeup to hide scars differs from covering dark circles or pimples.

As makeup artist Maya Adivi explains, "Concealing scars can be intricate because makeup is primarily a two-dimensional application, while scars are often three-dimensional.

Overdoing makeup to mask scars can accentuate their texture, making them more noticeable. The key is to apply thin layers and blend thoroughly."

Additionally, the technique varies depending on the scar's nature, whether it's sunken, raised, or flat with discoloration, as Adivi points out. Below is a step-by-step guide on using makeup to cover scars, along with the top makeup products for the task.

General Step-by-Step Guide to Covering Scars with Makeup Ensure Skin is Hydrated Adivi emphasizes that makeup applies more smoothly and lasts longer on moisturized skin. Begin by applying a moisturizer to your skin before moving on to makeup. Select a Primer Adivi notes that primers are beneficial for enhancing skin smoothness and can also prolong the wear of your makeup. Choose a primer that suits your skin type.

Apply Foundation Before Concealer Adivi prefers to apply foundation first, covering most of the face with a thin layer to subtly even out the skin tone. This approach may reduce the need for as much concealer. Set the Makeup To ensure the makeup's durability and coverage, use a powder, setting spray, or both to lock everything in place, as suggested by Adivi.

Techniques for Different Types of Scars It's crucial to adjust your technique based on the scar's characteristics. For Raised Scars Also known as hypertrophic scars, these are typically smooth and may exhibit a glossy appearance. Celebrity makeup artist Andrew Sotomayor recommends mattifying formulas to counteract shine and better adhere to the skin. If the scar isn't discolored, a light application of foundation and concealer, well-blended, is sufficient for coverage. For Depressed Scars Both makeup artists recommend a filling primer for pitted, atrophic scars, often from severe acne.

Adivi mentions that these primers are thicker and can fill in the depression. Applying a slightly lighter concealer to the scar's deepest point can create an illusion of lifting the depression.

Precision tools like small eyeliner brushes are ideal for such detailed application. For Dark Spots Adivi and Sotomayor agree that high-coverage concealers are essential for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. A long-wear concealer is also recommended. To enhance coverage, apply translucent powder before and after the concealer to prepare the skin and set the makeup. For Red Marks Concealer and foundation are usually enough to cover red scars. If additional coverage is needed, Adivi suggests using a green color corrector to neutralize redness, either before or mixed with the concealer.

The Best Makeup Products for Covering Scars Topicals Sealed Active Scar Filling Primer Adivi praises this primer for its ability to conceal and treat acne scars.

It contains retinol for skin cell turnover and salicylic acid to reduce breakouts. E.l.f. Poreless Putty Primer Sotomayor appreciates this affordable primer, describing it as a "skin-safe spackle" for filling pitted scars. Ensure it's applied only to fully healed scars. Dermaflage Scar Filler Kit Both professionals recommend this kit for larger or deeper scars. Adivi finds it challenging but effective, while Sotomayor notes its silicone components that create an even, skin-like texture.

Tarte Shape Tape Full Coverage Concealer Adivi continues to favor this concealer for its high coverage and staying power, though it may be too matte for those with dry skin. E.l.f. Camo Color Corrector Adivi considers this color corrector range, especially the green hue, as a budget-friendly option that covers well and blends naturally.

About Face The Performer Skin-Focused Foundation Sotomayor recommends this foundation for its matte finish and long-lasting wear on various skin types, including those with scars. Melanie Mills Setting Spray Sotomayor's favorite setting spray ensures makeup compatibility without disrupting powder application.

Remember, the art of makeup is about enhancing your natural beauty, and scars are a part of your unique story. Use these tips and products to feel confident in your own skin.
